Essential oils are not established treatments for motion sickness. A small 2026 study found that people wearing a lemon-essential-oil aromatherapy mask reported fewer symptoms during a bus ride, but the study was not randomized and cannot show that lemon oil was the reason for the improvement. Aromatherapy is best treated as an optional comfort measure—not a substitute for practical prevention strategies or appropriate medication.
For most travelers, the best-supported steps are to look toward the horizon, avoid reading or scrolling, reduce unnecessary head movement, choose a seat with less motion, arrive rested, and consider medication with a pharmacist or clinician when needed. If a scent makes nausea or headache worse, stop using it and get fresh air.

What is motion sickness?
Motion sickness can occur in cars, buses, trains, airplanes, boats, amusement rides, simulators, and virtual-reality environments. Carsickness, seasickness, and airsickness are different settings for the same basic problem.
The leading explanation is a mismatch between signals reaching the brain. The inner ear may sense movement while the eyes focus on a stationary phone, book, or cabin wall. The brain also receives information from muscles and joints about body position. When those signals do not agree with one another or with what the brain expects, motion-sickness symptoms can begin. The CDC Yellow Book and MedlinePlus describe this as a sensory-conflict or neural-mismatch process.
Common symptoms
- Queasiness or stomach awareness
- Dizziness or a feeling of imbalance
- Cold sweating, warmth, or pale skin
- Increased saliva, yawning, or loss of appetite
- Difficulty concentrating, fatigue, or drowsiness
- Headache or increased sensitivity to odors
- Nausea, retching, or vomiting
Symptoms usually build gradually during exposure and improve after the motion stops. Susceptibility varies. Children between about 7 and 12 years old are especially prone, and migraine, vertigo, pregnancy, sleep loss, alcohol, and nicotine can increase susceptibility in some people.
When symptoms need medical assessment
Motion sickness is common, but not every episode of dizziness or vomiting during travel is motion sickness. Seek medical advice when symptoms are new, unusually severe, continue well after the motion ends, happen without a motion trigger, or repeatedly interfere with normal activities.
Prompt assessment is especially important for repeated vomiting with signs of dehydration, fainting, a new severe headache, weakness, trouble speaking, chest pain, new hearing loss, confusion, or another symptom that does not fit a typical personal pattern. A persistent rocking or swaying sensation after sea or other travel can represent a different condition and deserves clinical evaluation.
What helps motion sickness most?
The CDC Yellow Book 2026 guidance emphasizes reducing sensory conflict and preparing before symptoms become strong. No single strategy works for everyone, but these measures have better support than essential-oil protocols:
- Look toward a stable horizon or distant point. This gives the eyes motion information that better matches the inner ear.
- Avoid reading, scrolling, gaming, or close visual work. Close focus can intensify the mismatch.
- Limit unnecessary head movement. Face forward and support the head when possible.
- Choose a lower-motion location. Examples include a seat near an airplane’s wings or away from the bow of a ship.
- Consider lying back when safe and practical. A supported position may reduce head movement.
- Use slow, controlled breathing. Regular breathing has shown benefit in laboratory studies and carries little risk.
- Travel rested. Sleep deprivation can worsen susceptibility.
- Avoid alcohol and nicotine before and during travel. Both can worsen motion sickness.
- Get fresh air when possible. Heat, stuffiness, and unpleasant odors can add to discomfort.
Repeated exposure can produce habituation, the most effective countermeasure described by the CDC, but it develops slowly and can be specific to one type of motion. It is not a practical immediate solution for every traveler.
What does research say about aromatherapy?
Lemon essential oil: one promising but preliminary study
A 2026 study by Zhang, Bao, and Feng enrolled 60 people who were susceptible to motion sickness. Participants completed controlled 30-minute bus rides in two phases: one wearing a standard disposable medical mask and another wearing a lemon-essential-oil aromatherapy mask. The researchers reported that the median total motion-sickness symptom score fell from 18 with the standard mask to 6 with the aromatherapy mask. Nausea, pallor, cold sweating, and salivation scores also decreased, and the authors reported no intervention-related adverse events.
Those results are encouraging, but the design has important weaknesses. It was a nonrandomized, self-controlled pre/post study, not a blinded randomized trial. Participants could smell the intervention, and the aromatherapy phase followed the comparison phase. Expectation, familiarity with the bus route, order effects, or placebo response could therefore explain part of the difference. One study of 60 people is not enough to establish lemon essential oil as an effective treatment. Read the PubMed abstract for the study details.

Ginger: do not confuse the herb with its essential oil
Ginger is frequently promoted for travel nausea, but product and route matter. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health says most studies of ginger for motion sickness have not shown it to be helpful. Most research has evaluated oral ginger products, not inhaled ginger essential oil. Results from capsules, foods, or extracts cannot automatically be transferred to essential-oil inhalation.

Peppermint: familiar does not mean proven
Peppermint aroma may feel cooling or refreshing to some travelers, and peppermint has been studied in other nausea settings. That does not establish that it prevents or relieves motion sickness. We did not find strong condition-specific evidence that supports presenting peppermint essential oil as a motion-sickness treatment. A person who enjoys the scent may use it only as optional sensory comfort, with the same limits described below.
A pleasant scent may be calming or distracting, but comfort is not the same as evidence that an oil treats the underlying sensory conflict.
If you choose an aroma, keep exposure personal and low
Motion sickness itself can increase sensitivity to odors. A scent that feels pleasant at home may be overwhelming in a moving vehicle. If an adult still wants to try aromatic comfort, the cautious approach is to use a product specifically intended for inhalation, follow its label, and keep exposure personal rather than scenting the entire vehicle.
- Test the product before travel. Do not discover a fragrance sensitivity while confined to a car, plane, or boat.
- Use a personal format. A commercially prepared personal inhaler or aromatherapy mask lets the user stop and seal it away. Do not diffuse into shared air without everyone’s agreement.
- Use the smallest label-directed exposure. More scent is not necessarily more helpful.
- Stop immediately if symptoms worsen. Headache, coughing, throat irritation, wheezing, dizziness, or increased nausea are reasons to move to fresh air.
- Keep the product away from eyes and skin. This article does not recommend topical lemon oil for motion sickness.
- Store oils securely. Keep concentrated oils and inhaler liquids out of the reach and sight of children and pets.
Do not swallow essential oils or add them to drinks. Do not place undiluted oils under the nose or behind the ears, and do not vape or heat them for inhalation. The Poison Control essential-oil guidance explains that misuse can cause poisoning, skin reactions, and respiratory problems. The FDA also cautions that plant-derived products are not automatically safe and that some citrus oils can harm sun-exposed skin.
People who are pregnant or breastfeeding, have asthma, migraines triggered by fragrance, epilepsy, significant allergies, or take regular medication should discuss product use with an appropriate healthcare professional. For children, start with the behavioral measures above and obtain pediatric guidance before using an essential-oil product. Avoid using a strong aroma around a driver, scent-sensitive passengers, or animals.
What about motion-sickness medication?
Medication can be useful when behavioral measures are not enough, particularly for an occasional trip. CDC guidance notes that motion-sickness medicines work best when taken before exposure. Common adult options can include meclizine, dimenhydrinate, or prescription scopolamine, but they can cause drowsiness, dry mouth, blurred vision, and other effects and may be unsuitable with certain health conditions or medicines.
Ask a pharmacist or clinician which option and timing are appropriate for you. Do not use this page as a dosing guide. Children require particular caution: sedating antihistamines can sometimes cause paradoxical agitation, and excessive sedation can be dangerous. CDC guidance advises avoiding scopolamine in children.
A practical travel plan
Before the trip
- Get adequate sleep and avoid alcohol or nicotine.
- Choose the lowest-motion seat available and face forward when possible.
- Plan breaks and ventilation for car travel.
- Ask a pharmacist about medication early enough to use it before motion begins.
- Pack water, a sealable bag, and any personal aroma product separately and securely.
- Do not test a new essential-oil product for the first time during travel.
During the trip
- Look outside toward the horizon or a distant stable point.
- Put away books, phones, and close-focus screens.
- Keep the head supported and minimize rapid movements.
- Use slow, regular breathing and seek cool fresh air.
- If using a personal aroma, keep it brief and stop at the first sign of irritation or worsening nausea.
After the trip
- Rest and replace fluids gradually after mild nausea or vomiting.
- Clean and store aroma products according to their labels.
- Seek medical advice if symptoms persist, are severe, or occur without motion.
Bottom line
Aromatherapy may provide comfort for some motion-sensitive travelers, and a new lemon-essential-oil study is worth following. The evidence is still too limited to say that lemon, ginger, peppermint, or another essential oil reliably treats motion sickness. Use practical sensory-conflict strategies first, involve a pharmacist or clinician when medication is needed, and keep any optional scent exposure low, personal, and easy to stop.
